Choose Udaipur for lakes, palaces and romance. Choose Jodhpur for a mighty fort, a blue-washed old city and an easy, central base. Choose Jaisalmer for golden sandstone, a living fort and a night in the Thar Desert. If you have only 6 to 7 days, pick two of the three. If you have 9 to 10 days, you can comfortably visit all three.
I'm based in Jaipur, and a large part of my work is helping travellers choose between these three cities. The question is never "which is best?" It's "which one is best for you?" A couple celebrating an anniversary, a photographer chasing desert light and a family travelling with teenagers will each give a different answer, and each of those answers is right.
Distances and drive times below come from published route planners and are approximate, since road conditions and your stops change them. Weather notes are typical seasonal patterns, not forecasts.

The key insight: Jodhpur sits in the middle. Udaipur and Jaisalmer are far apart, roughly 8 to 9 hours by road, so going directly between them in one day is tiring and wastes sightseeing time. Break that journey at Jodhpur. If you drive between Udaipur and Jodhpur, consider a stop at Ranakpur, famous for its Jain temple, which turns a transfer into part of the trip.
A practical road note: After Jodhpur, towns and fuel stations are spaced further apart, so a private car with a driver who knows the route is the sensible choice.
This is the classic comparison, and the two cities feel very different.
Udaipur is built around water. The City Palace rises above Lake Pichola, and the evening light on the lake is the reason many travellers fall for the city. You can ride a boat on the lake at sunset, wander the lanes of the old city, and visit Saheliyon ki Bari, the garden built for royal women. The Monsoon Palace on a hill above the city offers wide views at the end of the day.
Udaipur suits you if:
Think twice if: You want a dramatic, fortress-style attraction. Udaipur's palaces are beautiful, but its character is gentler.
Jodhpur is dominated by Mehrangarh Fort, which stands high on a rocky ridge above the old city. The blue-painted houses spread out below it, and the fort's museum and audio tour make it one of the most rewarding historic sites in Rajasthan. Umaid Bhawan Palace, part museum and part hotel, shows another side of the city. The old-city markets, with their spices, textiles and tea stalls, are lively and photogenic.
Jodhpur suits you if:
Think twice if: You're looking for a quiet, lakeside retreat. Jodhpur is busier and more energetic than Udaipur.
If romance and relaxation lead your list, choose Udaipur. If you want drama, history and a fort that stays with you, choose Jodhpur. If you have time for both, visit them in that order or the reverse, and enjoy the contrast.
Jodhpur and Jaisalmer are only about 5 hours apart, but they offer different experiences, and the real difference is the desert.
Jaisalmer rises from the Thar Desert in golden sandstone. Its fort is a "living fort", meaning people still live and work inside its walls, with shops, guesthouses and temples in the lanes. The intricately carved havelis, such as Patwon Ki Haveli, show how wealthy trading families once lived. Gadisar Lake is a calm spot for early morning walks. Beyond the city, the sand dunes at places like Sam and Khuri are where most travellers have their desert experience.
Jaisalmer suits you if:
Think twice if: You're short on time. Jaisalmer is far from most other cities, so the long drive needs to earn its place in your plan.

A shorter trip (6 to 7 days) |

|
A longer trip (9+ days) |
Both |
My honest view: Jodhpur is easier to fit into almost any itinerary, while Jaisalmer takes more commitment but gives you something Jodhpur and Udaipur cannot: a proper night in the desert.
For most couples, Udaipur is the strongest choice. The lake views, candlelit rooftop dinners, boat rides and heritage hotels create a romantic atmosphere that suits honeymoons and anniversaries.
That said, the best answer depends on what kind of romance you want:
If you can only choose one for a honeymoon, I'd pick Udaipur. If you have extra days, add Jaisalmer for contrast.
If the desert is the reason you're considering Jaisalmer, here is what the experience typically involves.
Practical points:
Jodhpur and Udaipur don't offer this kind of open-desert experience, which is why Jaisalmer earns its place if the desert matters to you.
Here is my recommended stay length for each city, based on what you can comfortably see without rushing.
|
City |
Recommended Stay |
Why |
|
Udaipur |
2 to 3 nights |
Palaces, lake, old city and a slow evening or two |
|
Jodhpur |
1 to 2 nights |
Fort, blue city and markets fit in one full day |
|
Jaisalmer |
2 nights |
One day for the fort and havelis, one evening for the dunes |
Sample trip lengths:
Remember to count the travel days. A 5-hour transfer plus check-in uses up most of an afternoon, so the nights above assume you arrive by midday.
The general pattern across Rajasthan is simple: winter is the best season, summer is the hardest, and the monsoon is quiet but scenic.
|
Season |
Months |
What to Expect |
Best For |
|
Winter |
October to March |
Dry, sunny days and cool evenings. Nights can be cold, especially in the desert. |
All three cities. Peak season. |
|
Summer |
April to June |
Very hot. May and June can pass 40°C in many places. |
Udaipur's lakes and cooler hill areas, if you must travel. |
|
Monsoon |
July to September |
Moderate rainfall, greener landscapes, fuller lakes, fewer crowds. Western Rajasthan sees lower rainfall. |
Udaipur's lake views. Camel safaris are generally not offered. |
Festival tip: The Jaisalmer Desert Festival usually takes place in February. It's lively and colourful, but accommodation fills up early, so book ahead if you want to attend.
Route A, 7 days, lakes and forts: Jaipur, then Jodhpur (via a Pushkar or Ajmer stop if you like), then Udaipur, flying out of Udaipur.
Route B, 7 days, forts and desert: Jaipur, then Jodhpur, then Jaisalmer, then return by road or rail to continue onward.
Route C, 10 days, all three: Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer (2 nights), back through Jodhpur, Ranakpur, Udaipur (3 nights). This is the classic Rajasthan circuit.
Jaisalmer is a dead end on the map, so any route that includes it needs a plan for coming back. Check current flight and train options for your dates, since services change.

Your Situation |
My Recommendation |
|
Honeymoon or anniversary |
Udaipur, with Jaisalmer as an add-on |
|
First trip to India |
Jodhpur and Udaipur |
|
Photography-focused |
Jodhpur and Jaisalmer |
|
Want a desert night |
Jaisalmer |
|
Travelling with young children |
Udaipur (shorter drives) |
|
Travelling with teenagers |
Jodhpur and Jaisalmer (fort and desert) |
|
Short on time (6 to 7 days) |
Two cities, not three |
|
Hate long drives |
Udaipur and Jodhpur only |
|
Want the full Rajasthan experience |
All three, 9 to 10 days |
1. Trying to do Udaipur to Jaisalmer in a single day. At roughly 8 to 9 hours by road, it consumes your sightseeing. Break the journey at Jodhpur.
2. Giving Jaisalmer only one night. With the long transfer, a single night leaves you exhausted and with no real desert time. Two nights is much better.
3. Visiting in peak summer. From April to June the heat makes sightseeing difficult, especially in Jodhpur and Jaisalmer.
4. Packing only for hot weather. Winter nights in the desert can be cold, so bring a warm layer.
5. Skipping the buffer. Fog, traffic and festival crowds can slow transfers, so avoid tight connections on the day you fly out.
6. Booking a desert camp on price alone. Check what's included and how far the camp is from the dunes.
7. Trying to see everything. Rajasthan rewards a slower pace. Fewer places, done well, beats a rush.
After years of planning Rajasthan routes, my advice is simple: don't try to prove you've seen everything. Choose the cities that match the trip you're picturing. If you want water and quiet evenings, go to Udaipur. If you want a fort that takes your breath away, go to Jodhpur. If you want the desert, go to Jaisalmer and stay long enough to enjoy it.
And if you can't choose, tell me how many days you have and what kind of traveller you are, and I'll suggest a route that fits.

Q: Which is better, Udaipur, Jodhpur or Jaisalmer?
It depends on your trip. Udaipur is best for lakes and romance, Jodhpur for a grand fort and a central base, and Jaisalmer for golden architecture and the desert. For a first trip with limited time, Udaipur and Jodhpur are the easiest pairing.
Q: How many days do I need in Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer?
Plan about 2 to 3 nights in Udaipur, 1 to 2 nights in Jodhpur and 2 nights in Jaisalmer. Seeing all three takes roughly 9 to 10 days, including travel time.
Q: How far is Udaipur from Jodhpur and Jaisalmer?
Udaipur to Jodhpur is about 265 km, or roughly 4.5 to 5 hours by road. Udaipur to Jaisalmer is about 490 to 530 km, or roughly 8 to 9 hours.
Q: Which city is best for a honeymoon in Rajasthan?
Udaipur is the most popular choice for its lakes, palaces and romantic dining. Many couples add Jaisalmer for a desert camp experience.
Q: Is Jaisalmer worth the long drive?
Yes, if the desert is a priority. The living fort, the havelis and a night near the dunes are things you can't get in Udaipur or Jodhpur. If the desert doesn't appeal to you, you can skip it without missing the rest of Rajasthan.
Q: What is the best time to visit Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer?
October to March is the best season for all three, with comfortable days and cool evenings. Summers are very hot, while the monsoon brings greener landscapes and fewer crowds, though camel safaris are generally not offered then.
Q: Can I visit all three cities in a week?
It's possible but rushed, because of the 8 to 9 hour gap between Udaipur and Jaisalmer. For 7 days, I recommend choosing two cities and giving each enough time.
Q: Which city has the best desert experience?
Jaisalmer. Its sand dunes, camel safaris and desert camps are what most travellers mean by a Rajasthan desert experience.
